Best Books for Career Searchers - Amidst Covid-19

Whether you lost a job you have been in or find yourself graduating into a pandemic-induced recession jobless, this article is for you. I want to share some books that I found particularly helpful during this time.

1. Strategize to Win  by Carla Harris
What makes this book special is that the career advice is both timeless but also especially relevant in a time of reinvention. Vice Chairman of Morgan Stanley Carla Harris, a well known motivational speaker, community leader, and author, wrote this book as a response to the questions she got from readers during the last major economic recession. I found this book in a time when I was feeling rather lost. Her direct and effective pearls of wisdom helped me clarify my objectives and strategize what to do next to position myself for success. This book meets readers where they are at and offers insights for both the short-term and the long-term.

2. 2 Hour Job Search  by Steve Dalton.
Do you feel like you are spending way too much time applying online into the void? This book won't literally shorten your job search to 2 hours, but it is a practical guide for navigating a world where online applications are the norm. Once you have figured out what you want to do, this book has a lot of specific actionable tips (with time limits that don't exceed 2 hours) to help you get organized, focused, and network your way to getting an interview. This book was written by the senior career consultant at Duke Fuqua School of Business, and it has helped a lot of people at my school as well.

3. The New Rules of Work  by Alexandra Cavoulacos and Kathryn Minshew
This book was written by two former McKinsey consultants that went on co-found theMuse.com. The book is designed to be a career playbook for the modern millennial. What keeps me coming back to this book repeatedly over the last two years is that the tone of the writing is both playful and fun (kind of like how my friends talk) and the tips are effective and well-researched. I love the templates and advice they have for everything - networking, cover letters, interviews, personal branding. I also recommend checking out their website, theMuse.com, for specific career advice articles as well.

Happy Reading!
